Tottenham Hotspur are three games away from winning the Champions League.
Ian Wright has defended Tottenham after Chris Sutton claimed that Ajax winning the Champions League would be a ‘better story’ than the North London club winning it.
On Tuesday night, Mauricio Pochettino’s side host the Dutch club at their new stadium for the first leg of their semi-final showdown.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live (29/04/2019 at 7:15 pm), Wright admitted that Arsenal fans will be ‘caning’ him after he defended Spurs following Sutton’s comments.
“It would be the best story if Ajax went on to win it,” Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live. “Was it the Juventus chairman who spoke about a breakaway just for the elite? Well, they’ve shot that down in flames now with what they have achieved this season. As much as I want Spurs to win it, I think it’ll be a great story if Ajax did go on and win it.
Wright stated: “So, it wouldn’t be a great story if Tottenham won it?” Sutton then responded by saying: “Of course it would. But just the way Ajax have done it. It’s a better story than Spurs winning it. The great history they have. They are a small fish. Spurs have had an easier run [than Ajax].
Wright later on responded by saying: “We’re not talking about Man City or Liverpool’s in respect of an English elite. There are Arsenal fans that are probably caning me. Spurs have been right in and amongst it. We look at it now without Kane. Again, they are going into a situation without their top man and their second top man, Son.”
Tottenham have passed a number of tough tests during their Champions League journey this season beating the likes of Dortmund and Manchester City along the way.
As for their Tuesday night opponents, they have arguably beaten much better teams during their passage to the last four.
They knocked current holders Real Madrid out of the competition then they saw off Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus in the following round.
There is no doubt that when Tottenham lock horns with Ajax it will be a mouthwatering encounter with a number of top-rated talents on show.
