Bryan Gil starred for Tottenham on Wednesday night as Spurs put their poor form behind them to smash Crystal Palace 4-0 at Selhurst Park – and Ian Wright has given his verdict on Spanish winger Gil, in his analysis on Match of the Day.

Gil, 21, started his second Premier League match of the season on Wednesday night – after starting against Villa on the weekend. He got an assist for Harry Kane’s second goal, after Kane had opened the scoring to put Spurs ahead.

Matt Doherty also got his name on the score sheet in which Gil was involved. Then, Gil basically created Son Heung-min’s goal – controlling the ball and laying off Kane, who lifted the ball into Son’s path. A superb performance.

Easily his best in a Tottenham shirt, Gil staked his claim to play more regularly for Spurs. That is, amid Spanish outlet Deporte Valenciano claiming Valencia want Gil on an 18-month loan with a permanent option worth £26.5million.

But Conte will surely want to keep Gil at Spurs, now. Arsenal legend Wright gave his verdict on Gil after watching the Spanish wonderkid tear his old side Palace apart – praising his defensive work rate, and that he always wants the ball.

“He was very good. Watched him against Villa, but it didn’t work out for him. He looks a bit light, a bit diminutive. But what I like, is he is always willing to get on the ball, and always busy. Lovely touches,” Wright said.

“Not afraid to take people on, very good left foot. He did well coming back, defending. The creativity, too. Be interesting to see how many more games he will get. I think so [there’s a bit of Kulusevski about him].”

With Dejan Kulusevski sidelined again against Palace and Richarlison yet to play for Spurs since the World Cup, Spurs needed a player to take the bull by the horns. Gil did that on Wednesday night. Just when Antonio Conte needed it.

There were doubts over the future of the Italian – but this time, not because of his contract. Spurs have been woeful of late. The win over Palace was the first game in which Spurs have not gone behind first, in their past 11 outings.

Spurs take on Portsmouth in the FA Cup this weekend and while the likes of Kane and Son will likely be rested, Gil should start. Conte should give Gil the chance to maintain his momentum, before next week’s North London derby.
