The striker came off the bench to score two goals in the win over Sunderland.

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has told BT Sport that the Gunners have finally found a suitable Plan B in striker Olivier Giroud.

The Frenchman has found himself on the bench at the beginning of this season as Alexis Sanchez has been preferred as the central striker.

Giroud made a case for his inclusion on Saturday afternoon, though, as he came off the bench to score two goals in the 4-1 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

It was an impressive display from Giroud and a clear indication of the alternative threat he offers Arsene Wenger’s side.

Wright was clearly delighted and says the forward is the Plan B that Arsenal have long craved.

“Arsene has tried something with Sanchez and as much as I don’t think he’s a centre forward it has worked up to this point,” he told BT Sport.

“Giroud being in that squad and coming off the bench to nick two goals is exactly what Arsenal need right now. He [Giroud] can come on as a Plan B.”

Giroud certainly does present Wenger with something of a headache moving forward.

Given Sanchez’s form – he has eight goals in all competitions so far – it is unlikely the Arsenal boss will be changing things any time soon.

More performances like the one against Sunderland, though, and it will be difficult to justify leaving the Frenchman out of his team for very long.

For now, Wenger can simply enjoy using him as an effective Plan B to help Arsenal continue their current push at the top of the Premier League table.
