Ian Wright has told BT Sport that Kevin Wimmer does not deserve criticism for his own goal in Tottenham Hotspur’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Sunday.
Both North London rivals renewed hostilities at the Emirates Stadium yesterday in a very evenly-fought encounter between the Premier League title challengers.
Wimmer headed a teasing Mesut Ozil free kick past Hugo Lloris before the break, with Alexis Sanchez and Laurent Koscienly both ready to pounce had the Austrian missed it.
Harry Kane levelled up the clash for Tottenham shortly after the break after Mousa Dembele’s powerful surge resulted in him winning a penalty from Koscielny.
It would be easy to criticise Wimmer for Arsenal’s opener, but Gunners icon Wright says that the centre-back could not do a lot about it.
He told BT Sport: “It’s a great ball in and I’m not sure Wimmer could do much. He’s got to try and do something.”
Christian Eriksen’s deceptive free kick came back off the post in the second half – the same one that Theo Walcott hit during the first 45 minutes – and that was about as close as either side came to finding a winner.
Tottenham, who remain unbeaten in the league, but without a win in seven games in all competitions, are five points behind leaders Liverpool now.
