Ian Wright has claimed that ‘a lot of people’ want reported Arsenal target, Raheem Sterling, to ‘fail’, as he told his own official podcast.

Over the weekend, Sterling answered a lot of critics by scoring the only goal of the game to help England beat Croatia 1-0 in their Euro 2020 opener.

Whilst Sterling impresses on the international stage, back on the domestic circuit, the Daily Mail claim that Mikel Arteta wants to bring him to Arsenal.

It’s a really bold and perhaps unrealistic move from Arsenal to try and lure his talents away from Manchester City, even though he has been out-of-form.

That’s why, Arsenal legend, Wright, was pleased that he answered those who felt that he shouldn’t have started for his country at Wembley.

“Can I say with Raheem,” said Wright. “In respects of Gareth and the loyalty is that he’s very loyal.

“Raheem has never been used as a sub. He either starts or if he’s on the bench then he doesn’t come on. But Gareth is using him.

“And this goal, him scoring that goal, it probably erases last season. That goal, the weight and the expectation on him being picked ahead of Jack Grealish.

“But there were a lot of people clamouring for him not to start. His manager trusts him. When we picked the forward line, we picked the guys who were in form like Foden and Sancho.

“Then you put in a performance like you did. At home and with all the pressure on him. There are a lot of people who would love to see him fail for various reasons.”

This is a big tournament for the £49 million player (BBC Sport) because of his recent form at club level.

Plus, there is serious competition behind him for those attacking areas, no less than Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho.

The quick-footed Dortmund superstar wasn’t even named in the 23 that faced off against Croatia, whilst Villa’s expert ball-carrier didn’t even come off the bench.
