The Arsenal legend feels that his old side did not make the most of their chances.
Ian Wright has said on BT Sport that he was pleased with Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Basel in the Champions League last night, but urged his former side to be more ruthless.
In spite of what the scoreline suggests, it was a very comfortable win for the Gunners in North London last night.
Two first-half goals from the resurgent Theo Walcott was enough to give Arsenal their first Champions League win of the season.
But it could, and definitely should, have been by a far bigger margin after Arsene Wenger’s side spurned a number of goalscoring chances in both halves, despite some excellent build-up play to those opportunities.
And Arsenal legend Wright feels that his former side missed the chance to put down a real marker as a result of their profligacy at the Emirates.
“One disappointing thing is I’d like us to be a bit more ruthless,” he said on BT Sport. “We could’ve scored four or five or six tonight and really put down a marker.”
Arsenal, who beat Chelsea 3-0 on Saturday, are tearing teams apart at the moment but it remains to be seen if they will continue playing like this when it matters.
Not that it does not matter now, but winning with stylish performances is much easier in September than it is in March or April, and doing it in the business end is something Arsenal simply have not done for many years now.
