Newcastle United could be the subject of a takeover.

BT Sport pundit Ian Wright looks on prior to the Emirates FA Cup Semi-Final match between Arsenal and Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on April 23, 2017 in London, England.

Pundit Ian Wright has told BBC Radio Five Live that he is ‘excited for Newcastle United if Mike Ashley does end up selling the club in the near future.

Ashley told Sky News on Monday that he is closer to selling the club as he has ever been, with a sale possible before the January transfer window.

Newcastle fans have been here before though; Ashley regularly hints that he could sell the club, especially before the January transfer window, before a deal somehow falls apart and he is left in charge.

That exact situation happened with Amanda Staveley last season, and fans are understandably wary of believing Ashley this time around, feeling that he is lying to supporters.

It remains to be seen what happens with Newcastle, but fans will be desperate to see Ashley leave the club more than 10 years after his arrival, with new owners clearly needed to take the club forward.

Now, pundit Wright has suggested that he wants to see Ashley go and signing arrive, suggesting that he wants to see passionate owners arrive at St James ‘Park.

Wright added that he is ‘genuinely excited’ about Newcastle’s future if they can get rid of Ashley, but understands why Newcastle fans aren’t jumping for joy just yet.

“If they can get that guy [Ashley] out, get a couple of signings and get themselves going and then get some owners which really get behind the team – I am genuinely excited for them if that can happen,” said Wright.

“I know Newcastle fans don’t want to get excited because they’ve heard it all before – but I am excited that he might be leaving,” he added.
