Ian Taylor and Stan Collymore expressed their delight on Twitter after Aston Villa beat Rotherham 2-1 on Wednesday night to move into fifth place in the Championship table.

It wasn’t an easy night for Dean Smith’s side, who saw centre-back Tyrone Mings sent off after 34 minutes for a handball in the penalty area as Will Vaulks converted his spot-kick to give his side the lead.

But after the break, promotion-chasing Villa turned on the heat with Jonathan Kodjia equalising via the penalty spot minutes after coming on before Jack Grealish scored a wonderful team goal.

It is a precious three points for Villa and former players Taylor and Collymore sent these messages on their personal Twitter accounts:

It was a scrappy game in the first half as Villa struggled for any rhythm, but they were awarded a penalty early on, with Tammy Abraham failing to convert his spot kick.

Things got worse for Villa as the game wore on because they were losing 1-0 and they were down to ten men, but they proved their worth after the break.

The Midlands outfit are now five points clear of seventh-placed Middlesbrough and will now prepare for a crucial clash against sixth-placed Bristol City on Saturday.

Lee Johnson’s side are one point behind Villa with a game in hand, but Smith’s men can open up a gap on their promotion rivals with another win.
