Ian Taylor has labelled reported Aston Villa target Tyrone Mings ‘a proper leader’ on Twitter as he edges closer to a return to the club.

The Birmingham Mail have claimed that Villa are to sign Mings for an initial fee of £20 million after a fee was agreed with Bournemouth for his signature.

Out of all the players Villa have been touted to sign this summer, it is fair to say that Mings’ name has been shouted the most and the loudest from the Villa Park faithful.

There were some question marks regarding the reported fee paid for Mings, but Taylor issued this response to a journalist on Twitter, who was defending Mings’ imminent arrival.

Villa have already begun pre-season training, with Dean Smith being very busy during the summer transfer window. If Mings does put pen-to-paper, he will be the club’s sixth signing of the summer.

Three of those players would be defensive-minded players, with Kortney Hause also making his switch to Villa permanent, whilst left-back Matt Targett will add much-needed quality to that area.

If fit, Mings will more than likely start Villa’s first game of the Premier League season when they take on last season’s Champions League finalists Tottenham.

It remains to be seen who will partner the powerhouse at the heart of Villa’s defence, but if fit then James Chester will surely start alongside the 26-year-old.
