Ian Taylor has admitted on Twitter that Aston Villa weren’t at their best and he felt they had ‘blown’ their chance to earn three points during their 1-0 win at Swansea City on Boxing Day.

After Conor Hourihane had put the away side into the lead after 65 minutes, the Swans were awarded a spot-kick in the 90th-minute when Anwar El-Ghazi brought down Nathan Dyer.

Despite the opportunity to rescue a draw, Wilfred Bony’s penalty was saved by goalkeeper Orjan Nyland in what was an open and scrappy game between both sides.

After the encounter, Holte End favourite Taylor posted a brutally honest verdict on the match as he praised the team for ‘grinding’ out a victory.

Here are his thoughts on the match as posted on his personal Twitter account:

Following that win, Dean Smith’s side move up to ninth in the Championship table, three points behind sixth-placed Derby County and a further 15 points behind Leeds United.

Nyland’s penalty save ensured Villa kept their first clean sheet since their 3-0 win at Middlesbrough at the start of the month – the Midlands club have conceded 37 goals this season.

Boyhood Villa fan Smith, who started off the year as Brentford boss, will be hoping to end 2018 with three points when his side travel to Preston North End at the weekend.
