Ian Taylor has called Aston Villa’s January transfer window ‘interesting’, after Dean Smith made four signings last month.

Villa brought in Lovre Kalinic and Kortney Hause early on in January, before snapping up Tom Carroll and Tyrone Mings on deadline day.

And Taylor thinks that Villa fans can now see clearly the sort of player that Smith wants to bring to Villa Park.

Smith has already spoken of lowering the average age of Villa’s squad during his time in charge.

Steve Bruce generally tended to favour experience over youth, but Smith has a greater willingness to develop young players on the training ground.

All four of Villa’s signings have a good pedigree, but there is a feeling that they haven’t reached their maximum potential yet.

Smith’s side are next in action at the weekend, when they take on Reading at the Madejski Stadium.
