Speaking to Off the Ball, Ian Rush has been discussing Liverpool’s poor start to the season.
The Reds have been off the boil this term, and there have been numerous explanations given for this recent demise.
A lack of confidence, an aging squad and the sale of Sadio Mane have been three key issues that have been highlighted in recent weeks, but Rush thinks that a lack of a pre-season is what has caused Liverpool so many problems.

Rush blames the World Cup
The Liverpool legend says that this team haven’t had enough rest over the summer after a gruelling season.
“I think they had such a magnificent season last season and people expect the same, but you’re not going to get that. We nearly won a quadruple, the expectation is there and I do think it’s a matter of coming back early, they haven’t had enough rest with the World Cup coming on and it’s been a hot summer in the UK. Maybe they are tired and when you’re tired you feel sorry for yourself. It hasn’t happened for Liverpool. I still think they’re going to have a good season, but everyone wants to beat Liverpool,” Rush said.
Toughest schedule ever
We’re not exaggerating when we say that this Liverpool team may be the most fatigued side in Premier League history.
Look at their schedule last season. For just the second time in the history of the Premier League, Liverpool played every single match they could have as they reached all three cup finals.
They couldn’t take their foot off of the gas in the Premier League either as the title race went down to the final day, and when you factor in the lack of a summer break due to this condensed World Cup season and you have a recipe for disaster.
Rush may be right about why Liverpool are struggling.
