Speaking on Off the Ball, Ian Rush has been discussing Erling Haaland and his incredible start to life at Manchester City.
As one of English football’s all-time great goalscorers, Rush was asked about Haaland’s remarkable start at City, and he says he’s been blown away by the Norwegian.
However, while Rush has been impressed by Haaland, he doesn’t believe that his talents are totally unique.
Indeed, the Liverpool legend says that Harry Kane would be doing exactly the same in this City team if he signed for the Premier League champions last summer.

Kane could match Haaland
Rush spoke about Kane and Haaland.
“He’s incredible. I think he has 20-odd goals already and he’s playing in the right side as well. Manchester City, I think if they’d signed Harry Kane last year I think Kane would be doing the exact same. They’ve been looking for a proper number nine, not a false nine, a proper number nine, but he’s a joy to watch,” Rush said.
Hard to agree
As talented as Harry Kane is, it’s hard to agree with this point of view from Rush.
Yes, Kane is a wonderful player who can score bags of goals, but Haaland is on another planet entirely.
Haaland’s goal haul this season isn’t just because City create so many chances. He was putting up similar numbers for both RB Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund – his Champions League record tells you all you need to know there.
Kane would be shining in this City team, that’s for sure, but to say that he’d get as many goals as Haaland may be a bit of a stretch.
Haaland is a goalscoring machine the likes of which we have never seen before in the Premier League.
