Steven Whittaker won the Scottish Premiership three times in Rangers colours – but will he return to Ibrox after being released by Norwich City?

With Steven Whittaker told he can leave Norwich City on a free after five years of service, it’s only natural that former club Rangers would be heavily linked with a summer move.

And Ian Murray, who donned the shirts of both clubs in his playing career, believes a return to Ibrox could certainly be on the cards, as reported by The Scotsman.

The 32-year-old may be a welcome addition to Pedro Caixinha’s side. A three-time league champion during his five seasons at Ibrox, Whittaker would bring a much needed winning mentality to the Glasgow giants while also offering experience in a backline containing youngsters David Bates and Myles Beerman.

‘Very good player’

The Scottish Sun claim that Hibernian boss Neil Lennon is attempting to lure Whittaker back to Easter Road – ten years after he departed for Rangers.

Yet, Murray believes the newly-promoted Hibs have a challenge on their hands.

“Steven’s a very good player and can play different positions as well. He’s a good guy to have around the team as well,” the six-time Scotland international, who played for Rangers between 2005 and 2007, told The Scotsman.

“He’s one of those players you want to play with because you know that he’ll give you everything. Hibs and Rangers are the two obvious teams who would maybe be in for him, with him having played for both of those clubs before, and it will be interesting to see what happens.”

Whittaker’s availability may be well timed with the Scottish Sun reporting that Charlton Athletic are aiming to lure Rangers right-back Lee Hodson back below the border this summer.

Furthermore, with the uber-attacking James Tavernier coming under fire for a number of defensive lapses, the addition of a player who has ‘been there and done it’ may appeal to Caixinha.
