Liverpool defender Andy Robertson recently helped Scotland secure a much-needed win over San Marino during the international break.
BBC Sport pundit and former Scottish Premiership player Ian McCall doesn’t think the Scotland captaincy is suiting Liverpool defender Andy Robertson.
Roberton has been thriving in a Liverpool shirt for over 12 months now, but when it comes to playing for Scotland it’s been a completely different story.
The Scots are facing the possibility of once again missing out on a major tournament, as their and Robertson’s hopes are pinned on next year’s playoffs.
Speaking to Sportsound on BBC Radio Scotland, former Rangers midfielder McCall hailed Robertson as a ‘top young man’ but thinks he shouldn’t be skipper for his country.
On Robertson not being able to transcend his club form onto the international stage: “There were guys who were saying the same about Kenny Dalglish, exactly the same,” McCall told Sportsound. “Jamie Redknapp got slaughtered for saying it. The bottom line is it’s true.
“One thing I would say about Andy Robertson, I have never met Andy, but I have been told by a lot of people that have met Andy that he’s a top, top young man.
“I don’t think the captaincy suits him. I genuinely don’t think it does – I’m not sure if that is having an effect on his performance.”
Whilst results and performances for Scotland have been pretty shocking for some time now, Robertson would have enjoyed his last outing for his country.
Whilst the Scots were playing the lowest-ranked team in the world in San Marino, they did thrash them 6-0 at Hampden to give fans some positive feeling.
Robertson will now be returning back to club football with a bit of a boost in his step as he and Liverpool prepare for a showdown against Manchester United on Sunday.
