Doncaster Rovers are flying high in League One, six months after manager Darren Moore was sacked by Championship outfit West Bromwich Albion.
Ian Holloway believes Darren Moore did not deserve to be sacked by West Bromwich Albion while praising the impact he has made since taking over at Doncaster Rovers, speaking on Quest (8 September, 9pm).
Eyebrows were raised all over the UK when Moore was handed his P45 in March. West Brom were fourth in the Championship at the time while playing with the sort of creativity and cutting edge that they hardly ever showed during the oh-so frustrating reign of Tony Pulis.
Moore was a club legend too at The Hawthorns.
But all of this counted for nothing when West Brom decided at the business end of a gruelling season to move in a completely different direction.
Six months on, West Brom are still a Championship team after losing to local rivals Aston Villa in the play-offs while Moore is earning rave reviews since returning to management with Doncaster.
Rovers are just four points off the top in League One with two games in hand, a record that looks even more impressive when you consider that they lost a number of star players over the summer, including top scorer John Marquis.
“It’s absolutely fantastic management,” Holloway said.
“I felt he was unfairly sacked at West Brom and for the job he was doing. And now, taking over at Donny when he lost three really important players, I think it’s a miracle what he’s doing.”
Slaven Bilic certainly has the managerial experience that Moore simply couldn’t call upon but it remains to be seen whether the Croatian can guide a talented, expensively-assembled squad back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
If not, he could be facing the same fate that befell Moore.
