Tottenham Hotspur were beaten 2-1 by Monaco in Champions League action yesterday.
Ian Holloway has told Sky Sports News, which was broadcast on 15th September, that Mauricio Pochettino was right to take a hardline stance with his Tottenham Hotspur squad, after their defeat to Monaco in the Champions League.
Spurs lost 2-1 against Monaco yesterday evening, meaning that their European campaign got off to a poor start.
After the match, Pochettino pulled no punches with his media comments – suggesting that he would have substituted every player at half-time and accusing his side of lacking passion.
But Holloway feels that Pochettino’s harsh comments were perfectly just, given the performance that his side served up.
“I can understand how he feels,” Holloway said. “You have to be intense. The fella is fantastic, he plays the modern way.
“He wants to overload you and get more bodies around you and he takes risks. His players didn’t do it, and the crowd – listening to it – seemed to think ‘we’re going to beat these’. You can’t do that.”
Tottenham were well short of their best against Monaco, in what was a disappointing evening.
Spurs dominated the early stages of the contest, but after Bernando Silva opened the scoring against the run of play, they failed to fully recover.
Monaco went into a 2-0 lead in the first half, and although Toby Alderweireld did pull one back for Spurs it was not enough.
Tottenham are now seeking to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible, with their next match coming against Sunderland in the Premier League.
