The Leeds United man did not look happy to be subbed.
Ian Holloway has told Sky Sports that Leeds United right-back Gaetano Berardi’s reaction to being substituted during the 3-0 defeat by Queens Park Rangers today was “petulant”.
Garry Monk’s spell as Leeds boss got off to a rotten start in West London as Nedum Onuoha’s early opener, courtesy of a Rob Green error, saw the Whites trail 1-0 after just four minutes at Loftus Road.
Tjaronn Chery doubled the lead from the penalty spot on 73 minutes, before Sebastian Polter capped an emphatic win for QPR in the dying stages to leave Leeds fans furious.
Another man who seemed to be fuming was the Swiss defender, who was withdrawn after just 22 minutes in what looked to be a tactical change by Monk, although Berardi had missed most of United’s pre-season through injury.
He stormed down the tunnel and Holloway read the reaction as a “petulant” gesture by the 27-year-old.
It was certainly not the start that Monk or Leeds wanted, but Holloway, who has won promotion to the Premier League twice during his managerial career, has suggested that ‘staying calm’ is crucial for the young manager.
“I think you’ve got to accept the decisions,” he told Sky Sports.
“Coming off and being petulant doesn’t do anybody any good. It’s early days yet, it’s a new group. Garry’s got a lot of work to do. All I would say is ‘stay calm’.”
