Aston Villa assistant manager John Terry has extended his stay at the Midlands outfit following their promotion to the Premier League.

Ian Holloway has claimed that Dean Smith doesn’t need John Terry at Aston Villa as he stated that the former Premier League defender has everything to be a manager.

Villa appointed Smith as their manager in October, and despite never working with Terry during his career, he appointed him as his assistant in a move that has since worked wonders.

Following Villa’s promotion to the Premier League, Terry’s name has been touted for several managerial jobs, but that was shut down by the club on Wednesday.

Villa announced on their official Twitter account that Terry had extended his current deal at the club as the Midlands outfit plan for life in the Premier League.

Speaking to the Alan Brazi Sports Breakfast Show on TalkSport (18/06/2019), former QPR manager, Holloway insisted that Smith doesn’t need Terry beside him at the club.

On how much influence Terry has on Villa: “I was at the play-final,” Holloway told TalkSport. “I was lucky enough to be working almost around the pitch as they all came out. He [Terry] was pulling them aside, talking to them and what Mings said about him that he wanted to come on loan [to Villa] to learn from Terry.

“He [Terry] has a presence. And it’s a wonderful presence. It really is. There is a calmness about him. When they went in front [against Derby], I saw him just go out and look, two or three of them looked over and he’s just going ‘go on, keep it moving’.

“The belief he gave Villa that day. Dean Smith doesn’t need John Terry, in my opinion, because Dean and his backroom staff are different class. But Dean has said what a wonderful member of staff he is and he’s enjoyed working with him. He’s got all sorts of things that automatically make him look like a manager.”

There’s no doubt that Terry will have ambitions of becoming a manager one day, but it remains to be seen when he will make that step up.

His former England teammates Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard have worked wonders in their jobs and he will be backing himself to have the same impact when he takes the hotseat of a club.
