The Hoops have now won five in a row, and are already at the top of the table once again.

Rangers legend Ian Durrant has admitted to the Evening Times that as much as he does not want to see it happen, Celtic have the ability to go on and win 10 league titles in a row.

Both Old Firm sides have managed to win nine consecutive league titles in the past – with Durrant being part of the Rangers team that reached the milestone – and the Hoops are well on their way to getting somewhere near that total, having won the last five Scottish Premiership crowns.

And ahead of the first Old Firm meeting of the new campaign – and the first in the league for around four years – Durrant has conceded that Mark Warburton’s men have a huge task on their hands if they hope to prevent the Hoops reaching the landmark at the end of the 2020-21 season.

“Of course they can do it,” he told the Evening Times when asked whether the Hoops could win 10.

“I hope they don’t. Rangers will want to make sure they don’t. Celtic will fancy their chances of doing it. They’re in a winning mentality, a winning roll, and it’s very hard to derail that.

“If you get a taste for it, as Celtic have now, in terms of going for six then seven, you do start looking at it. At three and four you are cagey, you’re in a comfort zone, but see when you get to five and six you do start looking at the record.”

While it is highly likely that plenty will have changed by the time that campaign rolls around, the smart money would currently suggest that the Bhoys have a good chance of remaining at the summit for the next five campaigns.

As Durrant suggests, they will have the momentum on their side if they continue to win league crowns, especially now the Light Blues are back in the top flight as it will begin to feel like a weight on the Ibrox club’s shoulders the longer the wait goes on for a title of their own.

And if they can continue to put themselves through to the Champions League group-stages, they will arguably find it easier to attract better players to Parkhead, which will also strengthen their hopes of winning 10 in a row.
