The winger is out of contract in the summer and Mark Warburton has expressed a desire to bring him to Ibrox.

Hearts manager Ian Cathro has been commenting on the future of winger Sam Nicholson, who has been linked with a move to Scottish Premiership side Rangers recently.

The Daily Record reported in December that Mark Warburton was a fan of the player and was hoping to bring him to Ibrox.

He is out of contract in the summer and the hope was to agree a pre-contract arrangement with him and then secure a permanent deal earlier than expected.

Rangers of course would have also been waiting to see if he could fully recover from knee surgery in September. He is now back in action for Hearts however and Cathro seemed to suggest this was all he cared about.

He is quoted by the Evening Express as stating:

“We can maybe look at those things further down the line but I am just getting to know him.

“He is just coming back from an injury, which was his main focus. There was no need for any focus to be on anything else.

“His focus now is on properly returning to the team, gradually building up his minutes and becoming stronger, and then reach a point he is ready to fight for a place in the team.

“That has to be a natural process. I am in no rush for Sam to do anything other than fight for his place in the team.”

Rangers boss Warburton is always looking to bring in top young talent and 21-year-old Nicholson is one of the best in the top-flight of Scottish football.

The club also need a new winger, so he is a perfect Ibrox target.

It seems that any January deal is out of the window for Rangers but Hearts are not in a rush to tie him down to a new deal. That may end up better for Rangers in the long run.
