Janusz Michallik has admitted that he didn’t see the current performances of Pape Matar Sarr coming at Tottenham Hotspur this season.
The 20-year-old has made an outstanding start under Ange Postecoglou this season, including opening the scoring during Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Manchester United.
Last season, Pape Matar Sarr struggled to settle, including being subbed after 20 minutes as Tottenham were 5-0 down away at Newcastle United – how things have changed since then!
But now that he is under a more attack-minded coach and playing in a three-man midfield, his performances are far different and it has left former USA international Janusz Michallik surprised, as he told ESPN.
Sarr joined Spurs as a teenager in 2021, with huge promise on his shoulders, he was loaned back to Metz, before returning to the club last season.
And now he has helped Spurs to an unbeaten start, with a goal and assist to his name after four Premier League games.

From Conte to Postecoglou
“Pape Sarr, I can’t say I saw this partnership and him playing this well,” said Michallik. “I think I would have lied if I said that.”

Tottenham’s midfield when Bentancur returns
What’s even more exciting for the Spurs fans is that Rodrigo Bentancur is yet to be added to this Postecoglou midfield.
It could be argued that, on paper, he is Tottenham’s best midfield player because of his all-round qualities, including breaking up play, composure on the ball and ability to carry the ball forward.
So, whilst Spurs have made a quite rapid start to life under Ange, things could yet heat up and go up a notch once Bentancur is fit and firing.
