Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Danny Murphy has warned Richarlison’s critics not to write him off just yet.
Richarlison has struggled at Tottenham since his arrival from Everton last summer, but Murphy has called for patience.
Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “Richarlison, some people jumping on the bandwagon too quickly on writing him off. This is a guy who’s got a bit about him. Brazil No.9, you get in the first team of Brazil.
“Everton, he got double figures I think, three, maybe four seasons in a relegation-battling team. He’s got more about him than Tottenham fans have seen yet, and I wouldn’t write him off just yet.”
Richarlison has been leading the line for Tottenham following Harry Kane’s departure to Bayern Munich. The 26-year-old started in both of Spurs’ first two Premier League matches this term but failed to score in either.
Richarlison can still come good at Tottenham
There is no denying that Richarlison’s move to Tottenham has not gone to plan so far. Much was obviously expected of him when he arrived.
The Brazil international often delivered for Everton and cost his current employers £60m. So to have netted just once in 27 Premier League outings in the previous campaign is quite disappointing.
That being said, it was carnage at Tottenham last season, with managers coming and going. It was no surprise that Richarlison and his team-mates struggled.
Ange Postecoglou’s arrival, though, represents a fresh start. And with Kane no longer at the club, Richarlison should get more starts.
The former Everton man definitely has time to turn his Tottenham career around, though Spurs would still probably be wise to bring in a new No.9 before the transfer window closes next month if they want to qualify for the Champions League.
With there being no guarantee that Richarlison will actually do the above, it would be a bit risky for Tottenham not to add another centre-forward to their squad.
