‘I wouldn’t want to go’: Phillips thinks reported Tottenham target shouldn’t leave his club

Former Southampton striker, Kevin Phillips, has told Stadium Astro that Danny Ings shouldn’t leave his current club amid reported interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

The Telegraph have recently reported that Southampton have rejected an approach from Spurs to take Ings on board this season.

Jose Mourinho’s side put five past the Saints on Sunday, with Ings bagging a brace against the North London club.

Former Sunderland hitman, Phillips, who won the European Golden Boot 20 years ago, offered his advice on Ings potentially moving because he made it clear that he ‘wouldn’t want to go’.

“If I am in Danny Ings’ position now after the season I have just had, and the start he has had personally, I wouldn’t want to go somewhere and sit on the bench and maybe play a bit part,” Phillips told Stadium Astro.

“At this stage of his career now, after the injuries, he is playing catch up. I would want to be playing, week in and week out and scoring goals.

“At Southampton, you are guaranteed to play – So, I would certainly be looking to stay at where I am.”

Ings has tasted what life is like at a club in Europe because he spent several seasons with Liverpool, but most of his time was spent in the treatment room.

Whilst the England international didn’t do anything wrong at Anfield, he hardly played because of two serious injuries.

Now that he’s been fit and firing for over 18 months, it would be a big risk to move to a club like Spurs, who already have Harry Kane on their books, Heung-Min Son, who netted four goals yesterday and a certain Gareth Bale waiting in the wings.
