Jamie Carragher has surprisingly claimed on CBS Sports on Paramount+ (06/05/21 at 10:40 pm) that he ‘wouldn’t want to see’ Mikel Arteta sacked by Arsenal.

On Thursday night, Arsenal were knocked out of the Europa League, with Arteta suffering that knockout punch by the man he replaced at the Emirates Stadium nearly two years ago.

Many have felt that Arteta has been given extra time by Arsenal this season because he won the FA Cup last summer, but he cannot fall back on anything like that this time around.

And whilst Arsenal fans, left, right and centre will be calling for Arteta’s head, Carragher surprisingly backed the former midfielder.

On Arteta’s future: “I would always support managers and I would never call for a manager to be sacked too early,” said Carragher. “With Arteta, I wouldn’t want to see him go.

“Arsenal have changed managers so often that they don’t want to look like a club that changes manager every season.

“So, he might be lucky from Wenger, Unai Emery, Freddie Ljungberg come in, so he there’s almost been four managers very quickly. So, he may get the benefit of the doubt because of that.

“But if we are seeing similar results and performances in the first two or three months at the start of next season then I think he will have a huge problem.”

The problem with Arsenal is Arsenal and not Arteta. Just like Unai Emery, he will pass by the mess that has engulfed that club for over a decade.

It’s those sitting at the top of the tree that need firing because they have ripped the heart and soul out of Arsenal.

Whilst the Gunners had their issues during Arsene Wenger’s latter years, at least they were recognisable, in terms of style of play, now they have gone from the invincibles to the invisibles.
