Paul Merson says that Tottenham Hotspur will need to worry about filling their stadium, if they are to sell Harry Kane this summer.

Kane’s future was once again the topic of debate on Sky Sports News this morning, with rumours that he could leave Tottenham at the end of the season growing stronger.

At the weekend there were claims from multiple sources, including Sky, that said Kane will ask to leave if Tottenham don’t make it into the Champions League, which is looking increasingly unlikely.

But Merson feels that Daniel Levy will need to take Tottenham’s new stadium into account when contemplating selling Kane.

And if he feels that Spurs may ask their star man to give them one more year before thinking of selling him, as they will want their supporters to return to the ground, when fans are allowed to attend.

“You’ve got to think, they have a big stadium there,” Merson said.

“You’ve got to fill that. If Harry Kane goes I would worry for Tottenham, I would absolutely worry.

“We see it with Ronaldo at United, he wanted to go – he was called in, just give us another year to get us by and sort us out.

“Everybody hopefully gets back in the stadiums next year hopefully, Tottenham fans will want to see Harry Kane there otherwise it becomes pretty disappointing.”

Whether Tottenham will keep hold of Kane remains to be seen, but what can be certain is that Levy will demand a huge fee for his side’s main goalscorer.

Kane has enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career at Tottenham this term, and his value is never likely to have been higher.

Spurs fans, of course, will be hoping that Kane stays for the long-term, as he is well on track to become the club’s record goalscorer.

But at the moment Tottenham are six points behind the top four, which means their hopes of playing Champions League football next season look very slim.
