Jose Enrique has claimed on his Instagram story that he would ‘love’ it if Newcastle United signed James Maddison from Leicester City.

The former left-back added that James Maddison is a player he ‘really, really likes’ for Newcastle United and thinks a possible deal for £60 million is ‘a lot of money’ for the midfielder.

Newcastle have submitted two bids for the goalscoring midfielder, the latest at £50 million which was rejected by those in the Midlands.

It seems as though the Magpies are keen to get their man, with the new Premier League season around the corner and Brendan Rodgers side hosting Brentford on Sunday.

Will Maddison be in the starting XI? Well, at this moment, it seems as though he will, as Enrique reacted to the latest transfer rumours involving the former Norwich City star.

“Newcastle have improved their first offer for Maddison,” said Enrique. “He is a player I really, really like. He is a player I would love Newcastle to be able to get him.

“They are asking for £60 million. To be honest, I understand Brendan (Rodgers) because he is saying that ‘you can’t buy his left leg for £40 odd million’ or something like that.

“I understand the price tag. Being English as well. They know Newcastle have money as well – The price increases with him being English, it’s the reality.

“I don’t remember how much Newcastle actually paid for Bruno (Guimaraes). But it was probably around this and he is an outstanding player. I really like Maddison and it would be a great addition for Newcastle. £45 million isn’t too bad, but £60 million is a lot of money.”

WILL LEICESTER CITY SELL MADDISON?

Previously, when the money has been put on the table, then star players have left the King Power Stadium, from Riyad Mahrez to Ben Chilwell.

When those players have left, they have joined teams already in the Champions League or are challenging at the top of the table, something Newcastle aren’t doing.

So, it will be interesting to see if the Saudi-owned club go in again for Maddison, and if the price is right, whether Leicester through gritted teeth accepts their offer.

If that does happen, then it won’t go down well with the Foxes faithful because they have signed a total of zero players this summer and a number of their star showmen could leave.

All of this should have Leicester looking over their shoulder ahead of the new Premier League season, whilst Newcastle are riding a wave and surging up the table.
