Some Liverpool fans think that they have already found their Georginio Wijnaldum replacement in the form in Nicolo Barella.
InterLive claim that Liverpool are readying an offer for the central midfielder, who has been in strong form in Serie A this term.
Barella would offer Liverpool further creativity and class in their midfield, and while he may not be the most imposing figure – he is also tenacious.
The Reds’ need for a central midfielder could be heightened if Wijnaldum departs.
At the moment Wijnaldum’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and Inter are thought to be one of the teams looking to land him on a free transfer.
Liverpool supporters now see the advantages of forming an open line of communication with Inter, and are keen to see the two midfielders effectively traded.
Liverpool would, of course, have to throw in a significant sum of money, even if they did arrange for Wijnaldum to join Inter at the end of his contract.
But, as a replacement, Barella makes a lot of sense as a target for the Reds.
Barella has a great deal of natural energy and is, crucially, six years younger than Wijnaldum, which could make him a strong long-term replacement for the Dutchman.
