‘I won’t lose any sleep’: Brendan Rodgers has blunt message for Liverpool & Chelsea today

Brendan Rodgers told his pre-match press conference that he ‘won’t lose any sleep’ over Liverpool and Chelsea in the race to finish in the top four.

Chelsea, Liverpool and Leicester head into the final day of the Premier League campaign with two Champions League spots up for grabs.

It’s in both Liverpool and Chelsea’s hands because if the Foxes are beaten by Spurs then it’s Europa League football for the Midlands side next season.

But other than that, it makes things pretty tasty, with Liverpool hosting Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace in his final game in charge and Chelsea making a tricky trip to Villa Park. 

Either way, Rodgers did describe both Chelsea and Liverpool’s players as ‘talented’ but made it clear that they won’t be affecting him in the build-up to this Champions League-chasing showdown.

On whether Leicester are third favourites compared to Liverpool and Chelsea heading into the final day: “We can only control what we do,” said Rodgers.

“The Chelsea squad and the Liverpool squad have very talented players. They have experienced players. But we cannot control that.

“That’s why I won’t lose any sleep over the two teams. We can control only what we can and that will be our focus for Sunday. Let’s get three points. Finish on 69 points and see where it takes us.

On whether he will be monitoring Liverpool/Chelsea games: “I think that’s natural. Of course, last game of the season, we will have an indication of what’s happening elsewhere.”

For Leicester, they missed out on the top four in similar circumstances last season, so doing it again will hurt even more.

Although, they can be soothed by the fact that they are FA Cup winners and they would take that over a top-four finish.

As for Chelsea, after sacking Frank Lampard, they could finish the season by losing the FA Cup final, Champions League final and finishing outside of the top four.

If that happens then the response from fans and those in the boardroom will be interesting.

And as for Liverpool, they will just want this injury-hit campaign to end and securing Champions League football will be a huge sigh of relief for those on Merseyside.
