Speaking on OTB, former Republic of Ireland international Kenny Cunningham has been chatting about Gabriel Martinelli and Arsenal.

The Brazilian has been exceptional in recent weeks playing on the left-wing for the Gunners, but Cunningham says that Martinelli could actually have a future as a number nine.

The youngster did break through as a central striker, and with Arsenal now looking for another striker, Cunningham has pondered whether or not they could save money by playing Martinelli up top again.

What’s been said?

Cunningham spoke about Martinelli.

“Martinelli is interesting, people forget he played as a central striker and caught the eye. He’s now playing on the left, but potentially he could step into a central area. He could solve some of Arsenal’s problems by playing down the middle. I wonder if Arteta looks at him and thinks he could save him £50m in the transfer market by playing down the middle of the pitch,” Cunningham said.

Worth a try

Arsenal need a new striker this summer, but they could save a lot of money if they give Martinelli a go up top.

Think about it, moving Martinelli to striker would allow Emile Smith Rowe to return to his spot on the left, and if he thrives up front, the Gunners won’t have to spend a massive fee on a player like Alexander Isak or Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the summer.

Of course, it may not work out. After all, Martinelli was moved to the left for a reason, but after his recent improvement, it could be worth a go.
