Speaking on the UMM YouTube channel, Gary Neville has been discussing Jurgen Klopp.

Neville was asked whether or not he wishes he could go back in time and convince Manchester United to hire Klopp before he went to Liverpool, and, understandably, Neville says the he wishes the Red Deviles could have gotten the German in as their manager.

Klopp has, of course, cemented himself as one of the Premier League’s all-time great coaches, and Neville would much rather have seen him in the Old Trafford dugout rather than the Anfield one.

What’s been said?

Neville spoke about Klopp.

“I can’t go back in time but I wish they had appointed Jurgen Klopp. He’s been supported at Liverpool by a brilliant backroom team that have got the players in for him and every manager at United has struggled, but he’s an exceptional manager, of course you wish we would have appointed him,” Neville said.

Hindsight is 20/20

Looking back, Jurgen Klopp would have been the perfect appointment for any football club before he went to Liverpool, but, let’s not forget, he didn’t have the cleanest CV when he arrived at Anfield.

Indeed, Klopp’s final year at Borussia Dortmund was an absolute nightmare, and Liverpool were taking something of a leap of faith when they brought him in back in 2016.

At the time, the likes of Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho were seen as much safer bets for Manchester United due to their long-standing success within the game, but, of course, over the past six years it’s become clear that Klopp is a truly elite, modern coach.

United should’ve appointed Klopp before he joined Liverpool, it’s easy to say that now, but if they had hired the German back then, more than a few eyebrows may have been raised.
