Billy Sharp had a dream debut for Leeds United this morning – scoring the winner against Middlesbrough.
Leeds United got their season started this afternoon with a much improved performance and result against Middlesbrough in The Championship’s early kick-off.
They were helped by the presence of more new arrivals, none more so than their new striker Billy Sharp. They snapped the Yorkshireman up from Southampton for a fee in the region of £600,000 and it has been immediately lauded as a great piece of business.
Sharp is a natural goal-scorer and a local lad, so he was always going to be a hit with the Leeds faithful – especially if he hits the back of the net.
Which he did today.
Sharp scored the winning goal for his new club in the 88th minute, with a typical poachers effort. He reacted fastest to a Tomas Mejias save from a Michael Tonge effort to tuck the ball away for a 1-0 victory – giving Dave Hockaday his first Championship win as Leeds United boss.
And Sharp was quick to thank the Leeds fans via his official Twitter account for their support – fans who will hope to see plenty more where that came from in 2014-15.
