‘I watched a lot’: Liverpool now keen on 25-year-old who studied Steven Gerrard during lockdown

According to Argentine outlet, El Crack Deportivo, Liverpool are interested in a move for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Rodrigo Bentancur.

The Reds have a successful history of signing Uruguayan stars, from Luis Suarez to Darwin Nunez, and it seems as though Bentancur could be next on the agenda.

As many will attest to, Liverpool’s midfield does need a revamp, and there’s reason to believe that Bentancur could be the answer to the Reds’ prayers.

Not only has he been shining for Tottenham as of late, the 25-year-old has also previously admitted that he studied Steven Gerrard’s game thoroughly during lockdown.

Bentancur studied Gerrard

The midfielder spoke about studying the likes of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard during lockdown when speaking to Juventus’ club website.

“I can’t wait for us to get back to training in groups. It’ll take a little while to recover our match fitness, but will be wonderful. There are going to be difficulties playing the season in the summer, for example the heat and the absence of the fans, so we’ll have to work at 150 per cent to make it work,” Bentancur said.

“I used the time (in lockdown) by taking a few lessons to improve my English, watching some box-sets. I admired Lampard and Gerrard when I was a kid, while I always liked Busquets too. I watched a lot of their games and that helped me to learn quite a lot.

“I don’t mind which role I play in midfield, it doesn’t make any difference. Coach Maurizio Sarri has always shown a lot of faith in me and I tried to repay him, but I can improve a lot more.”

It’s not difficult to believe that Bentancur has studied Gerrard in the past, because, at times, the Uruguayan can look a lot like the Liverpool legend.

Now, we’re not saying that Bentancur is anywhere near as good as Gerrard was, but he does have that innate ability to stand up and be counted when the chips are down.

Spurs’ recent habit of turning games around after poor first-half showings has largely been inspired by Bentancur raising his game when his team are behind, and that’s something Gerrard truly made a career of.

The Uruguayan could be a great addition to this Liverpool team.
