Garth Crooks has admitted that he initially ‘wasn’t sure’ why Mikel Arteta signed Jorginho for Arsenal following his January transfer from Chelsea.
The Italy international started Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Newcastle United on Sunday at St James’ Park after season regular Thomas Partey was dropped to the bench.
And whilst Crooks doubted Jorginho’s arrival before, he now understands why Mikel Arteta holds ‘such value’ for the midfielder after his performance against Newcastle.

It was one of Arsenal’s best performances of the season, and whilst it’s still in Manchester City’s hands, it keeps their Premier League title hopes alive.
Jorginho has a European Championship to his name and a Champions League medal. It would be even more special to win the Premier League title.
Crooks, whilst speaking to BBC Sport, is certainly seeing the better side of the possession-based midfielder, who was named Man of the Match over the weekend.
“When Jorginho arrived from Stamford Bridge I wasn’t entirely sure why Arsenal had invested in the Italian,” admitted Crooks.
“I must say I saw hints of why after his performance in midweek against Chelsea but the way he played against Newcastle explained exactly why Mikel Arteta saw such value in the player.
“His experience at crucial moments in the match at St James’ Park was clearly evident. He is the perfect foil for Thomas Partey, who has had an excellent season but is in desperate need of a rest like most of the players who played in the World Cup.”

JORGINHO SIGNING
The 31-year-old was a deadline-day signing for the Gunners after they snapped him up for £12 million from London rivals Chelsea (Sky Sports).
Moises Caicedo was the guy they wanted, but despite him trying to force a move, those in the Brighton boardroom just refused to entertain any offers.
In terms of, value-for-money, this Jorginho capture is far smarter than the Caicedo one, and in truth, they probably would have been in the same position they are in now if they had captured the Brighton star, so it’s not like that failed transfer has cost them.
