Speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, Callum Wilson has been discussing how he was feeling against Southampton at the weekend.

The Newcastle striker didn’t look quite right against the south-coast club on Sunday, and he was subbed off at half-time.

Wilson being brought off was something of a surprise at the time, but the England striker claims that he was feeling unwell during the game, stating that he was bed-bound for most of the week with an illness.

Wilson wasn’t well

The striker spoke about how he was feeling at the weekend.

“I still turned up, but I didn’t really take part did I. It was disappointing. I was in bed all week, but even on my deathbed I’d be running onto the pitch. Eventually it was time to come off, I wasn’t feeling great and it was one of them,” Wilson said.

Bad timing

Wilson probably couldn’t have picked a worse time to become ill.

With just days to go before the England World Cup squad is announced, Wilson needed just one more standout showing to get his name on Gareth Southgate’s squad list, but sadly, his body failed him when it mattered most.

However, Wilson will be hoping that his recent form will be enough to convince the England manager that he should be on the plane to Qatar, and, to be honest, he does deserve to go to the World Cup.

Wilson has been on fire in recent weeks, and going into a tournament like this in great form is so important if you want to be successful.

Let’s hope that this illness doesn’t play into Southgate’s thinking as he finalises his World Cup squad in the coming hours.
