Ryan Mason has admitted that he is stunned over how Tottenham Hotspur hitman Harry Kane isn’t ‘in the conversation’ to win Player of the Year this season.
Despite Tottenham’s poor campaign, Kane is having yet another stunning season in North London.
The 27-year-old has scored 21 goals and set up another 13 in 32 Premier League games and could win another Golden Boot award, with him and Mohamed Salah on the same number.
And yet, it’s Ruben Dias of newly-crowned champions Manchester City who is big favourite to scoop the coveted individual award.
Spurs are seventh in the Premier League table but the Lilywhites’ caretaker coach does not believe that the team’s dismal season should impede Kane’s pursuit of personal honours, claiming he should have a big chance of winning the award.
He told The Daily Mail: “I wasn’t aware Harry wouldn’t be in that conversation because, in previous seasons, players have won without winning the league. Harry has been the most influential player in the Premier League this season. He’s got the joint-most goals, most assists. If the prize is who is the best player in the Premier League, then Harry has to be in the conversation.
“The trophy isn’t for the team of the league, it’s for the player of the league. He’s one of the best players in the world, and statistically this season he has probably produced the best numbers. So why is he not in that conversation?”
Does Kane deserve to be in the conversation, as Mason put it? Yes – absolutely.
Tottenham haven’t been very good this season but it goes to show just how important the England striker is because without him, the North Londoners would’ve been in deep, deep trouble.
Whether he wins the award or not is unimportant in the grand scheme of things, particularly because Kane has said on numerous occasions that he would prefer team honours over individual ones.
But still, what’s right is right and although Dias has been an absolute monster under Pep Guardiola, Kane has been scaling these heights year after year and a bit of recognition wouldn’t go amiss.
