Speaking on Ben Foster’s YouTube channel, Troy Deeney has been discussing Newcastle United and the job Eddie Howe is doing at St James’ Park.
Howe has been tremendous since joining the Magpies last year, he’s taken them from being relegation candidates to European contenders, and while he’s had his fair share of financial help, the work Howe is doing shouldn’t be underestimated.
Interestingly, there were a few fans and pundits who turned their nose up at Howe when he was appointed due to his recent relegation with Bournemouth and poor record at Burnley.
One of his doubters was Troy Deeney, but the Birmingham City striker has claimed that Howe has ultimately proven him wrong.
Deeney doubted Howe
The pundit said that he was worried about Howe’s appointment at Newcastle at the time.
“I was worried about Eddie Howe to start with, I didn’t know if he could handle the egos. Bournemouth was his club and I worried it could’ve been a Burnley situation where he went to Burnley for six or seven weeks or whatever, but he’s the governor,” Deeney said.
Plenty to prove
To be fair, we can absolutely understand why Deeney had his reservations about Howe when he came in at Newcastle.
Prior to hiring Howe, Newcastle were looking at the likes of Unai Emery and Brendan Rodgers – managers who’d recently won trophies and competed at the highest level, whereas Howe had been out of the game for 18 months after a relegation with Bournemouth.
To put it simply, Howe had plenty to prove when he took the Newcastle job, but he’s passed every single test with flying colours so far.
Howe is already a local hero, and he may well be the man to lead Newcastle to their first major trophy of the modern era.
