Geoff Shreeves noticed that even in the warm-up Leeds United’s players were slipping on the pitch, as per his comments to Sky Sports.
The Elland Road surface has been subject to a lot of debate recently, with players struggling to keep their footing.
Once again last night, both Leeds and Southampton found the pitch difficult to press on.
The two sides like to engage opposition teams quickly, but changing direction appears very difficult on such a slippery surface.
And Shreeves said that huge clumps of mud were being picked off the players’ boots when they were down on the turf.
“Rough to say the least,” the pitch-side reporter said, when asked to describe the playing surface.
“I was watching the Leeds players in the warm-up, a lot of them were losing their footing there. Right in front of us you can see it cutting it in a number of places.
“When players are going down they are picking up clumps out of their studs as well.
“It is temporary this surface but it’s certainly not too clever.”
Leeds will relay their pitch at the end of the season, but it seems that they will just have to make do with their current surface for the time being.
Thankfully for Marcelo Bielsa’s side it did not stop them picking up the three points.
Leeds won 3-0 after a brilliant second-half display, and Patrick Bamford said after the game that he actually felt that the pitch aided them in the second half, when they played slightly more directly.
