‘I was very close to leaving’: £1.5m Bielsa favourite admits he almost left Leeds

Mateusz Klich has admitted to the Yorkshire Evening Post that he was very close to leaving Leeds United, but he is so glad that he stuck around now.

Klich joined Leeds in 2017 for £1.5 million (YEP), but his first season at the club was a real struggle.

The Polish international failed to break into Leeds’ starting line-up and was quickly loaned out to FC Utrecht.

It wasn’t until the arrival of Marcelo Bielsa at Elland Road that Klich really started to prove his worth.

The 30-year-old has gone on to play regularly in Leeds’ first-team in recent seasons and Klich is delighted to have played such a key role in his side’s promotion push this term.

“I’m very happy, very proud because behind the scenes there is a lot of hard work, dedication. I didn’t give up on Leeds and Leeds didn’t give up on me,” Klich said.

“I was very close to leaving the club and I might finish in the Premier League with two full seasons of the Championship playing every game.”

Klich has netted six goals and claimed five assists in the Championship this term to help Leeds to the verge of the Premier League.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men are currently three points clear of third placed Brentford, but they have a game in hand against Barnsley this evening.

If Leeds can win tonight they will need just one point from their remaining fixtures to mathematically seal a return to the top flight for the first time since 2004.
