Ian Wright has claimed that he was ‘surprised’ more teams didn’t want to sign Yves Bissouma this summer because he thinks the midfielder is an ‘unbelievable’ signing for Tottenham Hotspur, as he told his own podcast.

Tottenham moved early for Bissouma this summer by paying Brighton £25 million for his services (Sky Sports) – he had one-year left on his deal at the Amex Stadium.

The 25-year-old came off the bench on Saturday to make his Premier League debut in Spurs colours, with his new side coming from behind to beat Southampton 4-1.

A defensive-minded midfielder with composure and hard-hitting ability, Bissouma stood out like a sore thumb in an ever-progressing Brighton side.

But like the south coast club have done before, if the money is put on the table for their talented players, then they will sell, Marc Cucurella and Ben White are other examples.

Whilst someone like Cucurella had a fight on his hands with his transfer to Chelsea because Manchester City also wanted to sign him, there wasn’t that much noise with Bissouma and it surprised former Premier League striker, Ian Wright.

“When you see Bissouma moving on,” said Wright. “I was surprised that he didn’t have more people in for him, to be honest, for Bissouma, for whatever reason.

“I think Tottenham have made an unbelievable signing there.”

BISSOUMA HAS A BATTLE ON HIS HANDS

Antonio Conte has spoken about Tottenham needing depth in quality, and how if a certain first-team player drops out, then when his replacement comes in, the levels shouldn’t drop.

Well, Spurs fans shouldn’t have too much worry when it comes to the midfield department because they have three top-quality players to pick from.

The two men selected on Saturday were Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who is a well-liked figure by Spurs fans and one of the club’s most underrated players.

Then there is someone like Rodrigo Bentancur, who has been outstanding since his January arrival, but like Hojbjerg, because he is a defensive-minded player, he’s not up in lights like a Dejan Kulusevski.
