Jordan Lukaku told Soccer Bible’s Instagram story that he was ‘really close’ to signing for Newcastle United.
Even as far back as 2019, Newcastle were seemingly set to sign the left-back, who is the younger brother of former Premier League star, Romelu.
Newcastle, over the last few years, have always been searching for that left-sided player, including bringing Danny Rose on loan, and then in the summer, securing the signature of Jamaal Lewis.
In truth, the Rose deal just didn’t work, at all, whilst Lewis has had a tough time since swapping relegated Norwich, who have since been promoted again, for Newcastle.
Nonetheless, J.Lukaku has shared why a move to Newcastle wasn’t passed through.
“Yes, I was really close,” said Lukaku. “But, at the time, I was injured. Both knees. It was really bad, so it didn’t go through.
“But even a month after that, I had surgery on both knees at the same time.”

Newcastle may feel that they did well to miss Lukaku’s boat because, since then, he has struggled at his parent club Lazio, who have since loaned him out to Antwerp.
But that wouldn’t be of concern to those at Newcastle now because surviving in England’s top-flight is at the top of their mind.
Whilst they picked up a pretty drama-filled point at Anfield last time out, they are still looking over their shoulder even though the seat is a lot comfier than it was a number of weeks ago.
