Paul Merson has found one positive about Arsenal centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes.

The Brazilian centre-back was sent off in the midweek draw with Southampton at the Emirates Stadium.

Gabriel has been a good addition following his £27 million move to Arsenal from Lille but it was a difficult night on Wednesday up against Theo Walcott.

Speaking before the Gunners’ defeat by Everton on Saturday, Merson said on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday show about the 22-year-old’s sending off.

“People are going on about Gabriel? Seriously? You’ve had a yellow card already, why are you getting tight? Why would you get tight and pull him down? He’s still got to beat four or five players to score and then he’s shocked?”

When asked by Jeff Stelling for a positive, Merson said: “His teeth looked good! When he come off I was like wow!”

Gabriel was suspended for last night’s 2-1 loss at Goodison Park, and Mikel Arteta’s side needed him.

For the most part, the South American has looked a very decent signing by Arsenal and inexperience might’ve cost him a little against the Saints, having been dismissed for two yellow cards.

Arteta’s side are 15th in the Premier League and they’ll drop to 16th if Brighton beat bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United at home today.
