Speaking on Undr The Cosh, Danny Simpson has been discussing the end of his time at Leicester City and a move to Celtic that didn’t materialise.

The right-back was, of course, a part of that legendary title-winning side at Leicester back in 2016, but by the time the 2018/19 season came to an end, he was surplus to requirements at Leicester.

Simpson would eventually move to Huddersfield Town, but according to the player himself, he very nearly signed for Celtic on a three-year deal before the move collapsed.

Simpson nearly joined Celtic

The defender discussed almost heading to Glasgow.

“It was a bit of a mess that summer to be honest with you. A couple of things didn’t work out. I was going to sign for Celtic, three years with Neil Lennon all sorted and boxed off. I was leaving Leicester and Brendan helped with that because he left Celtic and he knew everyone and he said ‘Danny would be great’. It ticked all of my boxes leaving Leicester for Celtic, but it fell through and other clubs had then signed right-backs,” Simpson said.

Shame

It’s a shame that Simpson’s move to Celtic fell through because his career never really recovered from this point.

He would eventually drop down to the Championship and sign a short-term deal with Huddersfield, and since then, he’s struggled for gametime and motivation.

Meanwhile, if he’d headed to Celtic, he’d have been challenging for trophies and playing regular football on a long-term contract, and perhaps his career at the top level would have been prolonged.

Sometimes as a footballer, luck just isn’t on your side, and sadly, that seems to have been the case with Simpson and his Celtic move.
