Paul Merson has shared that he was ‘disappointed’ in Liverpool entering the European Super League but understood why Arsenal did so following Josh Kroenke’s recent comments, as he told Sky Sports.
In a recent interview for Sky Sports, Arsenal’s director shared that they were clearly ‘wrong’ in taking those actions at the start of the year.
It caused uproar across England, with Arsenal, their North London rivals, Chelsea, both Manchester clubs and Liverpool also following suit.
Following a spate of protests and anger across the footballing world, as soon as those clubs could release a statement saying they were entering the ESL, they were quickly pulling out of it.
It was an unforgettable move by those in the boardrooms and something that still isn’t forgotten about to this day.
Merson shared that Kroenke was right in what he was saying because he understood where they came from, but he was still critical of Manchester United and Liverpool’s actions.
“It’s true what he said,” said Merson. “They weighed it up. Was it better with Arsenal in the Super League or Arsenal not in the Super League?
“At the time, of course, it was. As soon as they listened to the fans, they weighed it up and they were one of the first to pull themselves out. I understand Arsenal doing it. They were struggling. Someone comes and says ‘do you want to play in the Super League?’
“Me? I was disappointed with Liverpool and Man United. They (Man United) are the biggest club in the world and should have gone ‘no, there won’t be a Super League’.
“With Arsenal and Tottenham, they had to do it. They were like ‘Woah, can’t believe our luck. They have got the wrong number here, haven’t they?’.”

There are a number of owners across the board that simply aren’t popular with their supporters.
Arsenal and Liverpool are prime examples, and those actions from earlier on in the year, is something that fans won’t forget and it just worsens the relationship between both parties.
If both sets of supporters were asked, they probably would still like to see the Kroenke’s sell Arsenal up and FSG leave Liverpool.
But, of course, that more than likely won’t happen any time soon.
