Former Rangers goalkeeper Andy Firth admits he was ‘devastated’ after being told he had to leave Ibrox when his contract expired last summer, speaking to The Athletic.
The former Liverpool youngster might have played just one league game in three years in Glasgow but that doesn’t mean he would not have snapped your arm off at the elbow if you’d offered him the chance to sign a new, long-term deal at the Europa League runners’ up.
Firth bid an emotional farewell to the Gers in July following the expiration of his contract.
But it’s not all bad. Now at Connah’s Quay in Wales, the 26-year-old is playing regular football for the first time in years.

“When I was let go, I felt like I was ready to go and play again,” Firth explains. “If I was going to drop down to a lower league, then I’d want to be playing. But if someone in the Prem said; ‘do you want to be ‘number 3’ and a training keeper’… then it’s different.
“There were a couple of offers to play League One or League Two (to play) as a No 2. But I’m 26, so I wanted to go and play and see what happens. If it doesn’t work out, then I can focus on my coaching.
“I was devastated when I had to leave Rangers as I loved the staff, the players, the city. My path has taken me to places I never thought I’d go. Did I think I’d go to Rangers from Barrow? Or that I’d be at the Nomads next?
“Not a chance. But I’m loving it.”
Firth, a member of Rangers’ 2021 Scottish Premiership-winning squad under boyhood hero Steven Gerrard, has kept 10 clean sheets in 17 games since joining Connay’s Quay on a free transfer.
The Nomads are currently second in the Welsh Premier League table.
