Jermaine Jenas has said on Match of the Day 2 on BBC One (10:49pm, May 9, 2021) that Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins was deservedly sent off against Manchester United.
Villa suffered a 3-1 defeat to United at Villa Park in the Premier League on Sunday.
As usual in Premier League games these days, there were refereeing controversies.
One of the decisions that has been talked about is the dismissal of Villa striker Watkins in the 89th minute.
The England international striker was sent off for two bookable offences.
For his second yellow card, Watkins was booked for simulation when he went down pressure from United goalkeeper Dean Henderson.
Villa manager Dean Smith has strongly criticised the dismissal of Watkins, but former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jenas, who now works as a pundit for BBC Sport, believes that it was the right call.
Jenas said on Match of the Day 2 on BBC One (10:49pm, May 9, 2021): “I was delighted to see a second yellow card given because hopefully that will set in people’s mind that this has to stop.”
It did appear that there was some contact from Henderson on Watkins, but there was not enough for the Villa striker to go down like he did. After all, football is a contact sport.
Villa will be disappointed with how they performed defensively and how they allowed their one-goal lead to slip.
