Speaking on the Kelly and Wright Show, Ian Wright has been discussing Mikel Arteta as he prepares to face off against his former club, Manchester City.

Wright was watching old clips of Arteta when he wasn’t at City, and he noted that the Gunners’ manager would never celebrate against Arsenal when he was at the Etihad.

Wright went on to speak about Arsenal’s decision to appoint Arteta, and he believes that the north London club were very brave when it came to appointing the Spaniard back in 2019.

Arsenal were brave to appoint Arteta

Wright spoke about Arteta’s arrival at Arsenal.

“He would never celebrate against Arsenal. We were very brave to take him. I was backing him from the start because he was under Pep and when you heard how Pep spoke about him, he is the next one,” Wright said.

Brave call

Wright is absolutely spot on about Arteta, appointing Arteta was a hugely brave decision from the Gunners.

Think about it, this is a team that needed to turn things around after a poor spell under Unai Emery, and rather than going for a tried and tested option, they gave Arteta his first job in management.

It’s very rare that you see a new manager step into the game at such a high level, but Arsenal clearly saw something in Arteta that nobody else did.

Arteta has proven to be an inspired appointment and after a lot of perseverance, Arsenal now sit at the top of the Premier League.
