Speaking on the BBC Radio Five Live Football Daily Podcast, Paul Dickov has been talking about Everton and their January transfer business.
The Toffees were one of the most active clubs in England in the January transfer window, signing the likes of Anwar El Ghazi, Dele Alli, Donny van de Beek, Vitaliy Mykolenko and Nathan Patterson in the winter window.
However, while Everton’s transfer business looks good on paper, their form hasn’t picked up, and Paul Dickov has been critical of their recruitment.
Indeed, the pundit says that he was amazed to see the Toffees looking to strengthen their midfield.
What’s been said?
Dickov gave his view on Everton’s midfield signings.
“I was amazed, and it’s nothing against Alli or Van de Beek, the last place they needed to strengthen was in the midfield areas. Frank said about his centre-halves since he came in and when you’re in a dogfight you need big characters at the back, Alli is a wonderful player and Van De Beek is a wonderful player on the ball. I was amazed that they didn’t strengthen the defence more because if you’re going to stay up, you have to keep some clean sheets,” Dickov said.

Shouldn’t need anyone
Dickov says that Everton should have strengthened their defence rather than their midfield, but their backline should have enough to stay up in any case.
Michael Keane and Ben Godfrey have both been in England squads lately, Yerry Mina is a former Barcelona player and Mason Holgate is also rather accomplished at this level.
Centre-back shouldn’t be a problem in this team, and while midfield additions weren’t an absolute necessity, when you can sign players like Alli and van de Beek, you don’t turn them down.
