Speaking to The Athletic, Bruno Fernandes has opened up on his failed transfer to Tottenham back in 2019.
The Portuguese ace was strongly linked with a move to north London in the summer of 2019, but sadly, a move never came to fruition for the ex-Sporting star.
Fernandes has been very open about the fact he wanted to join Spurs at that point, claiming that he was really angry with Sporting’s president for blocking his move to north London.

What’s been said?
Fernandes spoke about Spurs’ interest in his services.
“Obviously I wanted to go to the Premier League. The manager, Mauricio Pochettino, was the one who wanted me there. It was a good offer but Sporting tried their best to keep me.”
“The president (Frederico Varandas) spoke with me but he spoke with me on the wrong day. It was the day after they decided to refuse the offer from Tottenham and I was really angry. Luckily for me, the manager (Marcel Keizer) was the right one at the right time.”
What could have been
Fernandes very nearly ended up at Tottenham, and we can’t help but wonder what Spurs would have looked like if he did end up in north London.
The ‘amazing’ 28-year-old would probably have taken either Christian Eriksen or Dele Alli’s place in Pochettino’s Spurs team, and we can’t help but wonder whether or not Pochettino would have kept his job if he’d had the Portuguese superstar in his team.
If not, how would he have fared under Jose Mourinho? His fellow countryman could have helped him thrive at Spurs, and perhaps his time in north London would’ve gone differently if he’d been able to call upon the midfielder.
Unfortunately for Spurs, Fernandes joined Manchester United where he has since established himself as one of the better players in the Premier League.
