South Korea striker Cho Gue-Sung insists that he is not yet in talks regarding any ‘specific transfer’ as Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic line up a move for the World Cup frontman, speaking to YNA, but admits that he does plan to leave Jeonbuk Motors in 2023.

Two goals in the group stages and a public spat with Cristiano Ronaldo; Cho certainly found himself under the spotlight over in Qatar.

So much so that a move to Europe now feels like only a matter of time, the 2022 K-League Golden Boot winner showcasing his talents to a far wider audience. In addition to his brace against Ghana, no one in the tournament has averaged more ‘aerial duels won per game’ than a 6ft 2ins centre-forward with the leap of a salmon.

According to the Scottish Sun, Cho is now on the radar of a Celtic. The Hoops are preparing for life without the departing Giorgios Giakoumakis at Parkhead.

And while the 24-year-old insists that there are no talks currently underway, he does admit that he is packing his bags and preparing for a fresh start.

South Korea striker Cho Gue-Sung could replace Giorgios Giakoumakis at Celtic

“There is no specific transfer going on,” says Cho; scorer of 21 goals for Jeonbuk Motors last season. “Thanks to the love of many people, the opportunity (to move to Europe) seems to be coming. I will coordinate it and talk about it.

“The most important thing is to be able to play, rather than having a specific club you want. A player is at his coolest when he is playing.

“I am still a player of Jeonbuk Hyundai. I also want to go.”

Cho, last week, admitted that he was ‘dreaming’ of a move to Europe. Fenerbahce and Ferencvaros are reportedly joining Celtic in the race for his signature. The striker’s father, meanwhile, told The Herald that Cho’s agent is ‘in the process of finalising’ a move away.

“My strengths include heading, but I think defending is also my strength. I try to reduce the burden on defenders, midfielders, and goalkeepers by fighting from the front and participating in defending,” Cho adds, highlighting the high-pressing style that will appeal to Postecoglou.

“Even when it is difficult, that seems to be my strength.”

Celtic have already signed one breakout World Cup star. Canada full-back Alistair Johnston sealed a £4 million move from Montreal CF recently.
